Sally Newman brings an amazing production to FRINGE WORLD and gives space to others to express their experiences regarding gender and sexuality in a safe space at The Rosemount Hotel for FRINGE WORLD.

I Am They cast members includes Alison Dirix, Faye Graceway, Krispin Maesalu, Steph Delbianco, Jei Delbianco, Luke Newman, Lara Radic, Nicholas Lawrence, Candice Jade Douglas, Charlie Perth, Michelle Baker, Sally Newman, Courtney Lauren Seale Allie, Zanadu Dahlia, and the amazing Phoebe who stole everyone’s hearts as she read a personal letter to her family.

As the production began and the audience stared up at a blank and empty stage, everyone shifted and stared in confusion and awe as members of the audience began to slowly stand up and approach the stage. As the stage was slowly filled with people of all different experiences, the production began.

Each section of the production was broken up into bits with either a performance by the talented Luke Newman and Lara Radic who strummed their guitars and sang with their incredible voices, or a gesture to the next member of the cast who would perform – a hand held to the chest and a gesture of acknowledgment.

The entire cast kept your attention throughout the production and demanded and requested that you listened to them as they discussed their experiences throughout their lives.

From talking about transitioning, coming out to family and friends, the experiences of the past and comparing to the present, wanting people to open their hearts to love and different ways to love, retaking your body back from those who have bullied or hurt you, and being free to be yourself and express yourself in any way possible, this production has everything – including an incredible burlesque performance by Nicholas Lawrence which screamed androgyny/non-binary representation, an awe-inspiring performance by a Zanadu Dahlia – a young drag performer -, and an important spoken word discussion by Charlie Perth about the history of sexuality in Perth.

I AM THEY is a production about real stories that are so raw that they leave you crying or feeling something tug at your heart strings - some of which might hit a little closer to home than you would like to acknowledge. I cannot wait to see what Sally Newman brings to the stage next and I am please to say that I am giving I Am They five stars out of five stars. A production worth seeing!
