AJ’s box is the sexy, funny, alien themed cabaret that we didn’t know we needed in our lives. AJ (Andromeda Jellybean), owner of said intergalactic box, and her small army of synthetics, gyrated, sang and fought their way through a chaos filled hour of cabaret.

AJ comperes the show and is adorably funny and charming. Kicking off the action with pre-show audience interaction, AJ introduces us to her box and the premise of the show, to “fuel” her box through human love and applause.

The format is a simple cabaret show, but the premise is incredibly clever and provides flexibility for a range of different performance styles tied to the central theme.

Each synthetic performed a different cabaret, from burlesque to singing to a sexy chair dance. The highlight of the show was the epic four minute fight scene, interspersed with dancing, that had the audience raving afterwards. For real, this is some of the best fight choreography I’ve seen in a while, replete with acrobatics.

The staging was a simple, no frills Fringe stage with some nice lighting and sound design. The costumes were a range of black spandex and pleather (all the better to be “sexy” to arouse the humans). The costumes were well done and appropriate to the show, although I did feel sorry for AJ in her pleather outfit in the meltingly hot evening under the lights.

The show provided plenty of opportunities for audience interaction that was well executed by AJ, but never felt intrusive. This show is an adorable romp that will leave audiences cackling in their seats and asking for more!
