Well… who doesn’t like good SAX?

Thankfully there is an opportunity to get your fix at Sax Rockers: ON FIRE!'s high energy and fiercely fiery performance at FRINGE WORLD Festival.

With an unexpected opening, the brass extravaganza marches up to the stage to meet the fellow ensemble members, around 10 in total. Having so many performers on a small stage it is at times mayhem, messy with a muddle of madness for good measure; but I guess that’s the indulgence of a rocking good time, rigid it is not.

The calibre of talent is obvious, with highlights of exceptional instrumental capability demonstrated throughout the show. At times however, it is challenging to become fixated on the fabulously fervent flow of notes the musicians are producing through their instruments, as some of the anecdotal antics can become a little abrasive.

This honest intent to compel seemingly sometimes did the opposite and on the odd occasion seemingly pointed towards repel. Eventually the tone moderated and wasn’t so arresting, allowing for a more engrossed audience who were able to engage with the less erratic energy on stage.

The powerful plays included popular hits such as boys of summer, a banger from Bon Jovi and the smash hit from Kings of Leon indeed the saxiest song of the showcase. The performance demonstrated a variety of capabilities amongst the group and a vocal from one of the key saxists, was well received in his delivery of Mr Bright side. This was a great selection to sprinkle into the melodic mix as everyone’s hands were clapping and made for a memorable musical moment for the evening.

The ensemble bought it onto the home stretch with eye of the tiger, an interactive and clever we will rock you and a fun and light hearted walking on sunshine, whilst still with grit it was a favourable finish.

The musicians are absolutely giving it their all and there to entertain. With so much energy available it would be great to see some choreographic containment lines to transform the blaze into an inferno.

For a raw and rocking good time, Sax Rockers brings brass with a ‘kick yo arse’ attitude.
