‘A Tribute’ from the Actors’ Hub 4X4X4 series was 10 out of 10. It was an original, fresh concept with its point made perfectly. First up, it was a tribute to 5 celebrities and the attributes that made them who they are, and makes us all. Then just as you’re getting more and more curious why these 5, mostly American, mostly irritating celebrities, the second part reveals the answer – which turns out to be something all of us who grew up in Perth can relate to.

Written and Directed by Amanda Crewes, the script is so convincing, you can’t tell what’s playwright, what’s verbatim quotes from each celebrity, and what’s each actor’s own. ‘A Tribute’ is a great tribute itself to the talent in the Actors’ Hub – and there was plenty of it.

Stephanie Bedford, Tia Cullen, David Doig, Andrew Dunstan and Trent Foo played the 5 celebrities. Crewes rightly kept the focus sharp on them with an empty stage, minimal lighting effects and simple costumes; and these 5 talented actors didn’t let her down. They took us to the Oscars, Saturday Night Live, famous interviews, break downs and back again, all just through their art alone.

A big part of the enjoyment of 'A Tribute' is being in the Actors’ Hub itself. It’s a chance for the rest of us to be in the spaces where actors learn their craft. It’s exciting just to be there, to marvel at the bravery of acting students, and sense the blood, sweat and tear stains left from performing.

‘A Tribute’ is just one of the 4 shows the Actors’ Hub is putting on this Fringe. Now that I’ve seen this 1 out of the 4, I’ll definitely try and make the other 3.
