The premise of Jason Wood’s one hour set is that he is neither black nor white - he has a white father and a black mother; “caramel goodness” is what he calls it.

Coming from South Africa, he couldn’t walk down the street with either parent- it was illegal to have interracial relationships. Living in the reality of apartheid, his parents taught him to question everything. This experience spawns most of his absolutely brilliant societal observations.

He starts with his childhood and the realisation of how worthless learning the recorder was - “Have you ever heard of a professional recorder player?” he asks his small but enthusiastic audience. He scatters this observation about recorders throughout his set - in reference to dating women- to some hilarious conclusions. This is intelligent comedy because it keeps the narrative alive.

Being a single man, he covers dating apps like Tinder and gets some huge belly laughs- especially from the predominantly female audience. Wood is a short man at 5 foot 4. This is important to note because his height is the butt of most of his self deprecating humour. The second half of his show is almost exclusively based on his observations of being a short man in a world where women prefer tall men - yet another form of discrimination.

His observations are sadly true and have a poignant meaning behind every rapid fire sentence he utters. However, he manages to balance these really difficult moments in his personal life with uproariously funny anecdotes about how he overcomes each hurdle laid in front of him.

There is not only an originality to his comic stories, but a certain sense of honesty and trust you feel from him and the stories he tells. It’s like being with a funny mate at a dinner party.

Wood has a unique style that really does separate him from so many other comics. He is polished and well rehearsed and yet, at a flick of a switch, he improvises. If the audience reaction is any gauge, this young man is going places.

He may be short in stature but on stage Jason Wood is a giant of a comedian. Not to be missed.
