Hell Hath No Fury – Musical Bitchin’ from the Basement of Hell, is an original musical written by lead singer and performer, Zalia Joy. The intimate setting of Downstairs at the Maj is perfect for this kind of fun, quirky, show, drawing the audience into this emotion laden performance.
A small-scale musical with a big heart, the Hell Hath No Fury is staged with a live band that is visible on stage. The band members are also active participants in the action. Hell Hath No Fury tells the story of a woman's heartbreak. Through an unfortunate misadventure, the protagonist results in a descent into the basement of hell where she interacts with the resident welcoming committee.
The audience is treated to a collection of awesome original rock hits performed by the epic vocals of Zalia Joy and Fiona Cooper, and the incredible four-piece band. By far the highlight of the show, the incredible rock music is both driving and insightful, skilfully guiding the audience through the storyline.
The story takes us on an exploration of human emotion and frailty, both surreal and poignant. At some points the show did verge into melodrama and overly simplistic messaging which took away from the carefully curated emotional arc; the show is at its best when it guides the audience through the complexity of reactions to trauma with subtlety.
Fiona Cooper was stunning as the resident evil welcomer in the basement of hell; the audience laughed and cried along with her as she both supported and tortured the protagonist. A masterful performance.
The minimalist set and staging with effective use of lighting worked well for the production, with quick changes side of stage and using the band to assist with props and costume included them, even during dialogue portions.
Overall, Hell Hath No Fury was a lovely evening of entertainment, with stunning rock vocals, wonderful musical composition and a insightful storyline, suitable for all adults.
