The ensemble cast fills the small stage, each costumed in interpretations of an array of characters that might be found in computer games, medieval fairs, LARPs (Live Action Role Play), or favoured fantasy and speculative fiction shows. Their voices begin to soar through the dimly lit space as more skilful singers move through the crowd, and with that, the audience is transported to an otherwordly tavern filled with enchanting melodies and boisterous characters ready to host the evening.

The Rhythmos Choir provides stunning harmonies from what is a treasure trove of beautiful voices to create a polyphonic delight. This is a troupe of charismatic performers who have honed their talents to entwine with impressive precision. The a capella form of collaborative singing has enjoyed a resurgence of popularity in more mainstream audiences thanks to movies, shows, and music chart sensations. However, there is something in the water because we are fortunate to have a local group with a well-deserved international reputation. Despite the awkwardness of an audience muffled by masks, the troupe deftly creates a bewitching experience.

Drawing inspiration from pop culture and perhaps more esoteric sources, each song is artfully arranged into an enjoyable auditory feast regardless of your familiarity with its origins.

Attempting to draw audiences into participating in particular songs, it proves a little challenging for many when asked to join somewhat obscure tunes with lyrics they’re learning on the spot. While many audience members begin to speculate which of their favoured tavern-appropriate songs will be featured, it is less clear if they would be welcome to join in on those which seems to leave many tapping their toes shyly in the dark. This is all soon forgotten in the wake of another spellbinding crescendo.
