Joyous! A show full of feel-good happy vibes and universal appeal. Adam Hall and his band are well-loved veterans of the Perth Jazz scene, consistently delivering warm, fun, engaging shows. This time they were joined by Maestro Mohamed Michel from Havana on keys for some authentic Cuban music.

It was a street party atmosphere with many of the audience dancing along to the high energy Spanish songs. Hall, as bandleader, is one of Perth’s most prolific and versatile performers with 10 different shows on over Fringe this year. He is teaming up with a range of other performers, showcasing different styles of jazz from around the globe.

This show was colourful, light-hearted, inclusive, and playful. I loved the vintage look and there was a clear enjoyable camaraderie between Hall and his band. It was slick, professional and a delight to watch. They were clearly all having fun together and wanted everyone else to too. It was infectious (in a good way!) with many of the songs sung in Spanish, enhancing the party atmosphere. Some songs Hall made interactive and had fun with the audience inviting us to join in. Songs included Latin classics like “I Like it Like That” and the glorious “Cha-cha-chá”.

The ensemble was a sharp-looking eight-piece band, with three on percussion, one on keys, three on brass, and a double bass, so it had the big band sound. Each musician was excellent and had the spotlight on them at different times showcasing their instruments. Hall, on trumpet, with the saxophonist and trombonist came out into the audience intensifying the carnival atmosphere. You couldn’t help but want to get up and dance.

This audience were cosmopolitan and clearly loved what they experienced, a wonderful little slice of the best of Havana for the night, pure escapism. Do try and get to at least one of his shows. They lift the spirits and leave you feeling good. Upbeat and suitable for anyone.
