“I’ve been feeling jaded about FRINGE WORLD shows, but that one made me feel like—now I want to go and see more again.” That’s from my girlfriend who hadn’t told me she was feeling jaded when I invited her along to see “Sh*t We Like To Sing: Under The Rainbow!” We trotted up the stairs to Connections Nightclub feeling like funky-cool-chicks, (which we are not!) prepared to be entertained. Hooley dooley, entertained we were! Tap numbers, soulful, heartfelt ballads about parent/son relationships, delectable drag divas, and so many more of “the songs we love on the stage.”

Dylan Dorotich and his magical music mates chose an eclectic setlist that they linked beautifully with little snippets of sometimes profound chats to the audience. “We are all on our own boats, we just have to find what fills our sails.” The sincere LGBTIQA+ message of acceptance ran through the night, but with joy and cheeky winks to the audience, making us feel like we were all part of their journey.

Special mention to the madcap rendition of ‘Turn it Off’ from “The Book of Mormon.” All the gang worked together in a snappily choreographed routine that showcased each of these talented superstars in turn. Matthew Arnold’s electric facial expressions each time he passed through were hilarious.

To be fair, a nightclub isn’t a theatre, so the sound levels had some icky moments, and whilst the lighting technician worked cleverly with colour washes and layers for each song, it was sometimes hard to see clearly.

I love, love, love musicals, so a night filled with a quirky mix of them performed with gusto and bravado was heaven on a stick for me. I’m just glad my friend has found some Fringe love again too!

This is a must-see FRINGE WORLD show for everyone; joyous, heartfelt, professional, and with local talent shining brightly!
