“If our jokes don't make you laugh our poses will,” proclaims the description. Life Drawing with a Comedian brings a new meaning to the term ‘sketch comedy’: as the audience, you sketch while a comedian MC hosts.

In last night’s 50-minute session we had a handful of brave ‘models’ (who seemed to just be staff roped in to participate, rather than standup comedians as advertised - perhaps due to border challenges) taking turns to strike unusual poses complete with props and costume pieces. The audience was tasked with attempting to capture them in a range of artistic styles, from cubism to surrealism via an amusing foray into anthropomorphism.

Attendees spanned a range of ages and skill levels, from complete amateurs to professional art teachers, and all seemed to have a good time, giggling at the results of their own and other’s efforts.

Pencils and paper were provided, though the real enthusiasts brought along their own supplies (resulting in at least one impressive watercolour at yesterday’s session).

Those hoping for any guidance on drawing or a slick stand-up routine may be disappointed - it’s a very casual session with the MC gently making fun of the models and the audience’s attempts at art. His commentary was funny but unfortunately fell a bit flat in some cases as not everyone could see the drawing being referred to: it would be helpful to show them around to the whole audience. But as the kind of interactive show that you can chat (and drink) through, Life Drawing with a Comedian is a fun way to spend an hour with mates and test out your sketching skills.

Whether you’re an active artist or you haven’t picked up a pencil since primary school, gather a group, head down and have a go.
