For those unfamiliar with his work, Dr Ahmed is a comedy and cabaret performer who is also a medical doctor by trade. In this show, Dr Ahmed Get Hitched, Dr Ahmed tells the story of his recent wedding; a Greek-Pakistani affair spanning several days.

The show unfolds as Dr Ahmed recalls how he met his now-husband and the dramas that his wedding days brought. There are some songs peppered throughout, however, the emphasis of the performance is really on the story and the stand-up comedy.

As a natural storyteller, Dr Ahmed unravelled the narrative with ease. His performance persona radiates positivity and certainly made me feel as though everyone in his audience was welcome and appreciated.

Primarily, this show is upbeat and comedic, but there are also poignant and heartfelt moments throughout. Dr Ahmed’s message about love, acceptance and family was told with sincerity and conviction, and the disarming nature of both his comedy and his familial performance style enabled this message to really resonate with the audience.

A good example of this is that Dr Ahmed showed the audience real photos and videos from his wedding day. His decision to share these memories gave the show an intimate feel, as if an old friend was telling me about their own wedding. The reminder that every aspect of his story is 100% true made the gags even funnier and the sad moments even more heartbreaking.

There were a few aspects of the show which felt a little drawn out and could have been cut shorter in the interest of audience engagement. However, these moments were rare and the show generally moved at a comfortable pace.

Dr Ahmed Gets Hitched is animated, heartfelt and easily likable. This is an excellent show for comedy lovers who want a show with a little extra pizzaz.
