Is there anything better to do than sip on a midsummer night’s drink while watching the awesome team from Booze and The Bard do their thing for another run of their sell-out show A Midsummer Night’s Drink? Nothing really comes to mind. (Pro tip: DO remember to bring a beverage of your choice along with you – it just really adds to the atmosphere!)

It’s quite simple really. Five hilarious and talented actors get together to drink (with one tribute downing seven (!!!) shots before the start of the show) and perform some Shakespeare for the audience’s endless delight. A special spinning wheel adds another element of unpredictability to the night. The game’s afoot.

A Midsummer Night’s Drink (sorry, Dream) is already one of Shakespeare’s most well-known comedies, but it truly does lend itself to improvised farcical happenings and is the perfect play for the actors to flex their comedic muscles. The five actors, some of whom have to hop between roles a bit like Bugs Bunny on speed, handle everything the wheel, and their fellow tipsy actors, come up with. The show is a truly wild ride, with props, costumes and the occasional actor flying around the stage. The on-stage narrator does their best to move the action along because you get the feeling these guys could go on all night but you wouldn’t even mind if they did, that’s how much insane fun this show is.

A slight warning for those audience members who may be a little shy: very mild audience participation comes in the form of being asked to spin the wheel, but the actors don’t bite. Well, at least they didn’t tonight. Some willing participants also helped hold props as stand-ins for our valiant team of actors who occasionally had to play multiple characters at the same time, which is quite the feat.

It just goes to show that booze does indeed go quite well with The Bard.
