Robert Andrew: Our Mutable Histories

Visual Arts and Design / Indigenous
AUS
Scaled information transfer 2 2015
Robert Andrew is a Brisbane-based artist of Yaruwu (Broome) and Anglo-European ancestry. Through his art he explores his identity and attempts to uncover a family history that was for many years denied and hidden. Andrew uses contrasting materials, blending the ancient and the sacred with the cutting-edge and the high-tech. Witness the gradual degradation of artworks made from natural ochres, oxides and chalks as they are eroded by kinetic, mechanical sculptures that squirt water, ooze, or perform other acts of slow unraveling. Layers are revealed for the duration of the exhibition, and an ever-changing textural landscape is formed and beautifully transformed. Originally commissioned for the Museum of Brisbane (2017) and now debuting in WA, this is an experience to become immersed in.
