Rabbit Hole
With permission granted by New York playwright David Lindsay-Abaire to allow his Pulitzer Prize Winning play a queer adaptation, Rabbit Hole makes its world premiere at FRINGE WORLD in 2023. Perth-based actor Christopher Hill takes the lead as Ben, a role originally performed by Cynthia Nixon as Becca on Broadway and Nicole Kidman in the 2011 film adaptation. In doing so, Rabbit Hole becomes a modern story that has never been told on stage before as it explores same-sex marriage, the experience of being an LGBTIAQ+ parent and the universal challenges we survive as humans that are not limited by gender or sexuality.
Tracking the lives of married couple Ben and Howie, Rabbit Hole steps into their home as they are grieving the loss of their four-year-old son Danny. Through their differing experiences of grief, we see them cope in their own unique ways – sometimes through hurt, sometimes through humour. Rabbit Hole charts their bittersweet search for comfort in the darkest of places and for a path that will lead them back into the light of day.
“The audience is gifted with a journey that touches on nearly all the fundamental yearning of loss, gain, and how we humans mourn. It is what theatregoers thrive for; a chance to feel, empathise and contemplate the limits of a person facing unfair circumstances.” - Onstageblog, 2019
Presented by: Old Mill Theatre
The Old Mill Theatre is fortunate to be operating out of one of the most historic buildings in South Perth. It was opened in 1899 as a Mechanics Institute Hall before becoming a home for independent theatre in 1948. We are fortunate enough to have strong support from the City of South Perth and are a not-for-profit organisation. Our directors, actors and other staff do what they do because of a love for theatre – we are all volunteers. We’re very proud of the reputation that we have earned for putting on some of the best live theatre in Perth.
