BIPOCity - Unity amongst Diversity
BIPOCity – Unity amongst Diversity returns for a second year after a sell-out debut FRINGE WORLD season, showcasing established and emerging performers from diverse cultural backgrounds. This is a dynamic variety show featuring a rotating cast of burlesque, drag, musical and multidisciplinary artists from various multicultural backgrounds.
Standing together against tokenism and systemic racism in the arts, these artists come together to show that every person matters - every story matters. It is only by standing together, stepping forward and claiming their space in the spotlight that their stories will be told and be heard.
Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) performers will take your breath away as they entertain and move you with their artistry.
Presented by: Jojo Firestar
Jojo Firestar is a burlesque dancer and musician who loves to connect with people through music, song and dance. She creates and performs stories of empowerment that highlight struggles and controversial issues such as slut shaming and fighting the patriarchy. She sees a need to highlight performers from minority backgrounds in her work.
Born and raised in Perth, she has lived most of her adult life overseas. She has studied classical ballet, singing and contemporary, burlesque and Chinese dance. Living overseas allowed her the chance to learn, perform and produce with people from many backgrounds.
Working as a human rights advocate for almost 20 years, she sees the arts as another form of activism, a big f-you to systemic racism, the patriarchy and dangerous cultural and societal norms.
