Always Wine in Shiraz

Experience the depth of bittersweet Persian music grown from Shiraz - the ancient city of Poetry and Love. Savour the flavours and characteristics of this exciting musical journey.

Esfandiar Shahmir Quartet presents Esfandiar on ney (flute) and daf (frame drum), Kate Pass on double bass, Kira Gunn on harp, Geoff Bourgault on clarinet and Steve Richter on percussion. These award-winning performers will take you on a journey with traditional songs, melodies and improvisations from Iran, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Having won a Weekly Award at Fringe World 2022, Esfandiar Shahmir is excited to invite you to his new show "Always Wine in Shiraz", which promises to be a feast for the ears!

UPDATE: Esfandiar Shahmir has broken his arm, and will therefore be singing for this performance. Geoff Bourgault will be joining the band on clarinet.

Presented by: Esfandiar Shahmir

Esfandiar Shahmir is a world-class ney and daf player. Born in Tehran, Esfandiar originally studied theatre and developed a love of Persian music. This led him to form a band with singer, poet and composer Parvaz Homay, called Mastan Ensemble. He has recorded many albums with the band and toured around Iran and internationally. After migrating to Australia, he studied classical percussion at WAAPA and has been collaborating with Perth bands such as Kate Pass Kohesia Ensemble and Eastwinds. He has recorded several albums with these bands, contributing compositions for both Kohesia and Eastwinds. Esfandiar also performs educational concerts for Musica Viva In Schools and has performed around Australia and at festivals such as National Folk, Fairbridge, Kalgoorlie World Music and Nannup.
