Peter Combe is a childhood staple (at least he was for me) and his new Fringe show Brush Your Hair With a Toothbrush combines everything that makes him a celebrated and enduring children’s performer – fantastic songs, great stage presence, and the unique ability to be silly with a straight face.

Peter definitely knows how to captivate his audience, clearly a well-honed skill after years of performing for young and easily distracted audiences. His special sauce seems to be funny noises, silly voices, and super-catchy songs.

The show featured all of his well-known classics, including Tadpole Blues, Newspaper Mama, Spaghetti Bolognaise, Juicy Juicy Green Grass and Wash Your Face in Orange Juice, as well as his new releases 10,000 Stars and A Frog in My Cheese Sandwich. Peter had everyone in the audience singing and dancing along, with lots of audience interaction and fun dance routines led by Peter.

The audience seemed to be a majority of millennials, who have grown up singing along to Peter Combe and now introducing his music to their own children (guilty!). While the older songs were clearly the crowd favourites, Peter helpfully taught the audience lyrics for his new songs so everyone could sing along. Personally, I think more artists need to start doing this!

The show was definitely nostalgia-filled for the older members of the audience, while the younger ones just had a great time singing and dancing.

The perfect show for a fun family day out at Fringe!
