I unwittingly saved the best FRINGE WORLD show for last, getting to enjoy this amazing concert performed by the world-renowned Soweto Gospel Choir on their final day in Perth.
Their concert is called JOY, and what an apt description it is! Their Choir Director, Shimmy, gave an introduction as to what was to come, essentially saying, “Buckle up, you’re in for a treat.” And, a tremendous treat it was with the 16-person choir festooned in colourful traditional costumes regaling the sold-out Rechabite Main Hall with beautiful songs that were at times joyous, sad, uplifting, and feisty.
The choir’s selection of songs provides a glimpse into African culture, history, and heritage, in particular, South Africa during the difficult and dire years of Apartheid. Most of the songs were sung in various African languages and others in English, but with an African twist. The accompanying instruments consisted of keyboard, drumset, bongo drums and various acoustic sound makers.
The choir members can not only sing, with most of the singers performing stunning solos, but they also riveted the audience with their dance routines. It is such a gift to have this high-calibre group of professional singers perform at FRINGE WORLD, and their exuberant “shout it out from the rooftops” message of freedom, love, and joy is what the world needs now.
Perth has been an annual stop for The Soweto Gospel Choir, so you will most likely be able to see them at next year’s FRINGE WORLD.
