The fabulous flock of Penelope Splendour, Mae B Wilde and Adore Handel have scrambled together a very tasty chicken cabaret. The talents of the three performers are showcased through a series of nuggets featuring the life and times of chickens.
So, what comes first, the chicken or the egg? Well, actually, in this case, a combination of the two, because Penelope, Mae and Adore arrive on stage as chicks partway through emerging from their shells. Their costumes and appearance throughout are wacky and bright, confirming the impression that Penelope, Mae and Adore are having a blast.
Penelope, known for her facial expressions (back home in Melbourne, she runs workshops for facial engagement on stage), excels with her dancing, singing and comedic turns. I loved her interpretation of the ‘chicken banana’ song.
Mae brings her burlesque chops, delivers a beautiful soliloquy covering all things chicken, including ‘road crossing’, and her chicken basting scene is a hilarious highlight - that’s how oil should be applied!
Adore, renowned baritone, commands the stage with camp authority, treating us like naughty children but chicken dancing with the best and delivering a sweet song to escape the coop.
Some of the best moments are the interactions where people are plucked from the audience to participate in the silliness and fun, and they all looked like they loved the experience.
So, what is the secret recipe? Maybe it’s just getting together a group of talented ‘chicks’ and giving them free range to run amok on the chicken theme.
It’s chaotic, it’s nutty, it’s deliciously unhinged, and the three principals combine beautifully. Fantastic fringe frivolity.
I should egg you on to go see it. Chookas - winner winner chicken dinner.
