Sam Zito is a newcomer to the Australian stand-up scene, having built a solid reputation as a skit actor on TikTok and Instagram. Sam brings with him a sharp ability to read the room and some considerable understanding of shared truths that permeate the existence of just about every 20-something in Australia.
The show layers boy jokes without verging into lazy joke-writing territory, building bits together throughout the show in a funny and cohesive way. Sam doesn’t shy away from complexity, though, digging into themes of mental health struggles and the difficulty of defining yourself in your 20s.
At times, I felt like I was watching Sam hold court at the pub - he easily held the interest of the crowd and had no problem biting quickly with witty comebacks throughout the show. The tone felt almost conversational, and I had to stop myself from wanting to pipe up and ask more about some of his stories.
Sam’s comedy style is confident but not arrogant, sincere without being awkward and doesn’t shy away from confronting life’s messiness with a laugh and a smile. For an early-career comic, this show punches above its weight. One to watch.
