At its world premiere at FRINGE WORLD, KICKFLIP rolled into a packed audience and skated out on a standing ovation.

From the award-winning team behind Off Chops, this comedic circus caper follows two suburban teenage boys, Oscar and Jacob, who have unchecked optimism and a pipe dream as wide as the half pipe. Oscar and Jacob are navigating the trials of adolescence, chaotic house parties, awkward crushes, while constantly pursuing aura points to be “epic”. Both performers are sensational, with Oscar displaying all the traits of an anxious teenager and Jacob brimming with cheeky, easy-going riffs.

The laughs land like a clean kickflip, technical, controlled and timed to perfection. A skit about the excitement of getting ready for a party was a brilliant highlight. The setups are hilariously observed, skewering their excitement with dial-up precision. All backed by a timeless, bangin’ soundtrack of pop-punk, including Green Day and Good Charlotte.

Both maintain the elastic-limbed mannerisms of skater kids, while delivering genuinely impressive acrobatics that had the crowd roaring with cheers and laughter. Their body control is gnarly, their flips and balances impressive and all executed without ever bailing on their characters.

But beneath it all, there’s heart. Self-love and perseverance hum through the show when things get sketchy. The audience was all in, rising to their feet in a standing ovation. I’ve never heard The Gold Digger venue roar with that much loud applause or felt the floor thrum so loudly from foot stomping.

A triumph? Quite possibly. But one thing’s certain, KICKFLIP is fully sick.
