Hilarious and unique, Boganlesque: The Burbs is a journey through Western Australia’s iconic bogan suburbs. Cameron McLaren is a news host on “Wild Sky News” who takes the "live studio audience" across WA to Byford, Innaloo, Kwinana, Midland, Karratha and more.
Each performance satirises an aspect of bogan culture. There is plenty of hi-vis and mining money, as well as a smoko and a trip to Maccas. My favourite performance was Trude and Prue enjoying a crisp after-work VB.
The Boganlesque crowd was one of the most passionate I’ve experienced at FRINGE WORLD. There was hooting and hollering as audience members’ home suburbs were mentioned. This is a show for the proud bogans and those who want to celebrate the bogan life while poking affectionate fun at it.
Despite the show’s preliminary warnings that Boganlesque isn’t a show for the easily offended, it was milder than I anticipated. While there were a few loose “c u next Tuesdays” and raised middle fingers, they were more sparse than one might expect. The banter was in good faith, with no suburb safe, bogan or not.
Boganlesque is a clever and fresh burlesque show. Quintessentially Aussie and quintessentially FRINGE, Boganlesque: The Burbs is not to be missed.
