We attended the early show and were treated to a lineup of four comedians: two Africans, one Aussie, and one Englishman. As with most mixed bills, the styles varied, and not every set landed the same way — but there were definitely some standout moments.

The clear highlight of the night was Ruben. His ability to laugh at himself was genuinely amusing and instantly likable. His storytelling felt natural and relaxed, and his reflections on life, travel, and relationships struck the right balance between self-awareness and humour. The other comedians also shared tales from their journeys around the world and experiences with their partners. Some of these stories were very funny, while others didn’t quite hit the mark.

Overall, we had a few proper belly laughs and generally enjoyed the show. I’ve seen Englishman Walks Into a Bar before, and the calibre felt similar — lots of audience interaction and a casual, conversational style throughout. The Aussie comic leaned heavily into self-deprecating humour; while I did laugh a couple of times, much of the content felt a bit flat for me. That said, some of the jokes at a 6 pm show were a little cheekier than expected, though there was a clear warning beforehand, so fair enough.

Perhaps I wasn’t quite “oiled up” enough to fully appreciate the humour, but while it wasn’t the best comedy show I’ve seen, it certainly wasn’t the worst. I’d happily see it again. All up, it was a solid start to the evening.
