It was a spontaneous, on-the-day decision to go to this event. My offsider was more invested in the prospect of a decent feed in Leederville afterwards and checking out the Subiaco footy grounds. Turns out, this impulsive decision did not disappoint!

From the moment we walked in, it was clear this wasn’t your standard night out. We were personally greeted by the bride, Nanna herself, who warmly recognised those who had committed to dressing up and graciously forgave those (yes, us) who hadn’t. A strong start.

The venue was spot on, and the juxtaposition of the Subi Footy club hosting a bridal bingo wedding was a conversation starter in itself. We were encouraged to purchase Dame Edna type sunnies, just $5, to add to the atmosphere and allow for those not dressed up for this wedding to look the part.

With the Groom running late (classic), Nanna’s granddaughter introduced her ‘nan’ and fabulously dressed audience members were randomly recruited to act as flower girls. At this point, it was obvious we weren’t just watching the show; we were part of it.

Nanna decided to kill time by getting us to play Bingo – already set up on the tables. She didn’t muck around with the number calling, keeping it short and sweet. Miss a number, miss a chance of winning. Between calls, she would engage in very funny chats with her guests, including some hilariously pointed lines at the ‘nurses’, all taken in very good spirit.

Along with the spontaneous roasting of wedding guests, Nanna also had some witty prepared commentaries about life in general, from footy to politics to the property market for the 30-year-olds. Every punchline was perfectly paired with music.

If you want to find out what happened to the Groom and how the audience was absorbed into the bridal party, you’ll have to go and see it for yourself.

I strongly encourage anyone considering this show to go. And, do yourself a favour, dress for the occasion.
