A passage from Gothic medieval ritual to Renaissance refinement.

Created by Madilynn Bayliss and Kai Taberner, this elegant performance traces a shift from the ritualised Gothic medieval world into the grace of the Renaissance. The meditative piece opens in the medieval era, with ceremonial dance that is communal and symbolically charged. Precise, repetitive movements, shaped by social order and spirituality, are performed in a linear formation to emphasise social cohesion. These looped sequences, resembling a series of still photographs, are marked by gentle gesture rather than individual expression. With its focus on pattern and timing, the work draws on religious and spiritual symbolism, inviting the audience to interpret rather than simply observe.

Gothic medieval ritual gradually loosens into the composure and elegance of the Renaissance, as the choreography shifts toward lighter, more flowing and buoyant expression. As the pace strengthens, movement becomes expansive, revealed through partner-based dances and synchronised ensemble patterns. The emotional tone softens, transitioning from solemn restraint to pleasure and beauty.

Performed by Keana Mislang, Jess Pettitt, Nathan Turtur, Luther Wilson, and Bayliss herself, the ensemble sustains a high level of technical precision and control throughout the piece. Remaining on stage for the full duration, the performers demonstrate notable endurance, blending classical technique with contemporary movement.

Co-composed by Maddy Briggs and Lily Innes, the soundscape is soothing and immersive, gently drawing the audience into the shifting atmospheres and supporting its reflective quality. Lighting designer Katharina Brieden complements this with subtle illumination, shaping the space and giving the bare stage depth and focus.

From the moment the audience enters the studio, the performance holds attention throughout, sustaining its atmosphere from beginning to end. This is a compelling and accomplished work on the FRINGE WORLD stage.
