There’s a stunning power to rock and metal songs, as we all know, but rarely is that so highlighted as when the songs are stripped of their power chords and rows of amps and delivered in a more acoustic style.

Velvet Metal – led by singer Davina Liana, ably backed on acoustic guitar and cello by a couple of very talented long haired chaps introduced only as Aaron and Alex, respectively – fill the room with a tremendous, albeit refined, noise for an hour or so as they cherry pick such classics as Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir, Metallica’s Unforgiven, The Rolling Stones’ Paint It Black, Audioslave’s Like A Stone and Foo Fighter’s Times Like These.

Two extra female vocalists are brought on stage for an almost doo wop version of Guns n’ Roses’ Sweet Child Of Mine; Black Sabbath’s Heaven & Hell sends chills through us; my colleague asserts that their epic, slightly slower version of Metallica’s Master Of Puppets is “even more sinister than the original.”

Liana’s operatic vocals are so powerful that when she fully lets loose, they’re almost too loud in the small room, combining brilliantly with the simple instrumentation to take the songs to places the songwriters probably never dreamed they would go.

Aerosmith’s Dream On closes an excellent and very enjoyable hour-long show on yet another high note, leaving us with only one question: why are they only playing two shows?
