When author and performer are both educators, you can expect fun and information.
As the title indicates, the focus of this show is on The Genius of Tom Lehrer. His generosity is also revealed at the end of the performance; the donation of his works to the public domain, made during his long life, now allows artists the freedom to work with a rich heritage in creative ways.
Antony (Dr H) Hubmayer has chosen to modify the title of an album (An Evening Wasted With Tom Lehrer) and offer An Unwasted Evening, a unique performance to an appreciative audience.
It was fun, and occasionally unsettling, to listen to the satirical lyrics, ranging from maths to chemistry, plus a rash of dodgy health and safety scenarios. Historical and biographical details about Lehrer ('teacher' in name and fact) included cases of controversy, yet some unsavoury scenarios can also be found in children's fairytales, Shakespeare tragedies and Roald Dahl's stories.
Multi-talented performer, Dr H, displayed dazzling piano skills in the period styles favoured by Lehrer and introduced musical satire, created long ago, with occasional references to more current instances. He interacted with the audience with instructions for extensive participation, and questions about why Lehrer is not so well-known now created a sense of complicity, linked to age and awareness.
How many knew he only died recently, at the age of 97? Maybe a biography will reveal more about the man; in the meantime, we can all hope to hear and see more shows like this.
