Tash York began Chaos Cabaret by assuring us she was bringing the Saturday night energy to 6:20pm on a Sunday. With her quintessential humour and wit, she delivered all the shenanigans and tomfoolery of a late-night show at a weeknight-appropriate hour.
Unrehearsed by design, Chaos Cabaret presents three progressively more improvised rounds of competition. To begin, performers adapted their prepared act to unexpected changes. The next two rounds were completely improvised and were where Chaos Cabaret shone as a unique variety show concept.
Chaos Cabaret excelled because of Tash York’s own improvised songs. Using audience input, she crafted witty soundtracks for the improvised performances. With online voting, the audience decided who performed to “Temu Charli XCX” and who to “Dua Lipa on a budget”. While the cast rotates, Tash York’s talent and humour are sure to make any night outstanding.
Tash York spoke throughout the show of her nostalgia for the ‘good old days’ of FRINGE WORLD. For Tash, it seems that FRINGE WORLD Festivals' past meant wacky low-budget performances and trying out unconventional material in front of open-minded crowds. With Chaos Cabaret, the unpolished and unexpected are celebrated. These aren’t flawless performances, but they are hilarious and original.
