Right from the start, the stage was set for a high-energy performance as the guitarist, bassist, keyboardist, and drummer burst into action with Aretha Franklin’s 'Respect'. Shameem quite literally flew out of the curtain and leapt onto the stage with an enthusiasm that excited the audience. With that, a sensational display of musical talent ensued.
Both Shameem’s and the band’s years of experience were evident in how relaxed and completely present they were in every song. Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Anastacia, RAYE, Alicia Keys; Shameem covers a lot of ground, including an original of her own, 'Beautiful Soul' from her 2015 album, 'The Second City'. The commentary for each era provided great context to orient the direction of the show. As we moved through the eras, the whole room grooved, clapping and cheering with each song they recognised.
Impressively smooth vocal runs and high notes belted with ease characterised the performance. The addition of electric guitar solos to classic tunes captivated the audience, garnering the appeal of a jazz band that celebrates all its musicians. It is wonderful to watch performances from people who love what they do.
Fantastic performance all round – I hope to see Shameem and the band perform again soon.
