Brought to the Connections stage by local legend, Lucy Lovegun, Most Comedic title winner at the 2024 Burlesque Hall of Fame, DIRTY SEXY FUNNY: BURLUSQUE was a superb showcase of abilities across all three of those categories.
It wouldn’t be Perth without an AC/DC tribute, and tonight Lovegun brought the biggest ginger mullet, the daggiest flanno, and the cheapest beer, all while she took an actual fair suck of the sauce bottle. Joined on stage by duelling MCs Veruca Sour and Sugar Du Joure, both of whom thought they were Lovegun’s singular choice for the role, the extent of talent on display in the first five minutes alone was already phenomenal.
Karl Kayoss, in the cutest pink and white ensemble, danced, flipped, and lip-synched his way through M.I.L.F.$ with an intensity not seen for a Fergie song since 2014, whilst sole interstate troupe member, Sydney’s Kelly Ann Doll, a performer seemingly half glitter, half human, likely required a hazard warning for her routine, as her heavily rhinestoned apparel flew to all corners of the venue.
On an evening where all performances were fabulous, perhaps the pinnacle, the fulsome embrace of community, and, spoken aloud, the review bait, was the cast’s heartfelt call for world peace, Show Them To Me – Rodney Carrington’s absurdly comedic ode to breasts. Played as a group routine, with Du Joure, a bouffant-haired country drag king, this act was ridiculous, silly, and so very much fun.
Producer Lovegun had collected a spectacular cast, all of whom gave their absolute top-tier efforts, with each hitting at least one of the performance goals listed in the show title. DIRTY SEXY FUNNY: BURLESQUE was a fantastic collaboration, and yet another example of the exceedingly high quality the Boorloo burlesque scene often attains.
