This is the first FRINGE WORLD production from blue joy theatre co., one of the more promising new theatre collectives to come out of Perth’s artistic scene in recent memory.

Better late, than never is the brainchild of blue joy’s founder Mohammed ‘Ayo Busari’, whose script pulls on emotional heartstrings that would resonate amongst any young person who has lived and loved amongst a large social group. Director Harper Nguyen leads the production with a fierce intention – it’s clear that this story is as meaningful to her as it is to Ayo.

Led by a trio of actors in Rebecca Collin, Lizzy Ellis and Nathan Calvert, three emerging actors who bring sophistication in their performances to the piece. Each actor is drawing on something different yet truthful to bring their character’s individual quirks and traits to life. It makes for a small but strong ensemble piece that allows these three actors to carry the show with honesty and confidence.

The play is at its strongest when it relies on the palpable chemistry of its lead actors and less on the exposition it uses to keep the audience following its ever-shifting story eras.

With strong performances and a clear intention, this is a solid first production from blue joy theatre co.
