Laura Davis described the writing of their show Despair is Beneath Us as like having a panic attack. This description feels accurate as they free-wheel through all of life’s fears and torments. Most are relatable fears and struggles from romantic encounters to wisdom teeth removal (perhaps not that far a journey), but Laura’s unique take on all of these comes with an irrepressible wit and an off-centre oddball spin that turns the struggle into hilarity for their audience.

They paint a powerful visual picture of their journey from their childhood in Perth through the dark grey depths of their time as a working comedian in Scotland and back. Audiences at FRINGE WORLD in Perth will find their past highly relatable, bringing even more humour to their already sharp and flawlessly crafted comedy.

Unlike a panic attack, however, the show does not snowball into paralysis and negativity. Instead, Laura Davis rides life like a rollercoaster, bringing profound resolution and understanding of life from their struggles. I left the show feeling uplifted and hopeful in these often dark and uncertain times of global turmoil.

At one stage in the show, Laura describes that as a child, they had a great fear of being stuck in a box. This is not going to be a problem from now on, thanks to the unique, quirky and expansive comedy they make.
