When you think of FRINGE WORLD, perhaps you think of dazzling cabaret, jaw-dropping circus, chaotic comedy or whimsical magic shows. What you probably don’t think of, is a musical, spoken-word, modern retelling of a Greek Tragedy, with a protagonist named Dave. But that is the premise of this must-see show by North Yorkshire duo, Wright & Grainger.
Wright & Grainger are understated veterans of the Fringe circuit, and Orpheus is another gem in their repertoire of shows inspired by Ancient Greek mythology.
This intimate performance tells the story of Orpheus (otherwise known as Dave), his Bruce Springsteen-fuelled encounter with the beautiful dryad Eurydice, and their sweeping, (under) world-defying tragic love.
This intimate performance tells the story of Orpheus (otherwise known as Dave), his Bruce Springsteen-fuelled encounter with the beautiful dryad Eurydice, and their sweeping, (under) world-defying tragic love.
For those familiar with the myth, you’ll know exactly how it ends – but the combination of Alexander Wright’s mesmerising and vibrant narration, mixed with the soulful guitar and vocals of Phil Grainger, will leave you as captivated as if it were the first time you were hearing it.
It is simple, affecting storytelling at its finest. In a world full of greyscale, this show breathes colour. Wright & Grainger hold their audience, if only for a brief hour, in a type of awe that only the best shows can. Just like Eurydice and Dave, your heart may half stop and half start, or, like mine, it may leave fuller than before.
