As Magic Dyke begins by warning its audience, this show is neither a lesbian magic show nor a Magic Mike parody. Instead, the star-studded cast provides an hour of entertainment that is sexy, funny and above all unapologetically queer.

An hour of camp fun, Magic Dyke brings together regulars of the Perth burlesque scene, Bush Rat, Lucy Lovegun, Gigi Love, Kitty Littèur, Dyke Wazowski (aka Brad Titt) and Maedae and is hosted by Howie Doin.

The show features both solo and group performances and is interlaced with remarks about the lesbian experience and opportunities for wholesome audience participation (musical chairs fans rise up). While some of the transitions between performances felt disjointed, I appreciated their endearing silliness.

This isn’t a show that tries to be thought-provoking or dwells on the difficulties of the queer experience. Instead, it offers a welcome escape, with silly anecdotes and hilariously unexpected performances inspired by topics as unserious as the bisexual difficulty of sitting in chairs and the attractiveness of being forklift certified.

It’s heartwarming to see a show that spotlights and celebrates queer women in such a lighthearted way. Queer women and allies alike will adore Magic Dyke.
