The most uplifting, feel-good hour you’ll have at Fringe!

There are shows that aim for nostalgia, and then there’s Funbelievable! 90s Rewind, which cannonballs straight into it. From the moment the hilarious preshow reel flickers to life, the room comes alive. The first beat drops, and you can practically hear the collective “oh my God, I forgot about this song” and suddenly, we are all 30 years younger.

Matt Hale doesn’t ease in. He arrives with the energy of someone who knows exactly what he’s about to unleash. Within minutes, volunteers are on stage, and the audience has surrendered. It’s participatory, yes, but never cruel. There’s cheek without humiliation. Hale reads the room well; no one becomes the butt of the joke. That balance is harder than it looks, and you are in safe hands with Matt Hale.

And the soundtrack? Relentless. One anthem after another. You don’t just hear the 90s - you feel them somewhere in your knees. At one point, I glanced around and realised half the crowd were already on their feet. By the finale, everyone’s clapping, singing and experiencing a flood of pure joy and the atmosphere tips into something close to communal euphoria. Strangers grinning at strangers. The bar, and even the toilets afterwards, were buzzing with “remember when…”.

What makes it work is the craft beneath the chaos. The quick costume changes, the tight pacing, the crowd control, none of it accidental. Hale makes spontaneity look easy, which usually means it isn’t. He’s polished, confident, and clearly has the hours under his belt—a consummate professional and proudly Perth’s own.

It’s big. It’s loud. It’s unapologetically nostalgic. If you think you’re allergic to audience participation, think again; resistance is futile! Otherwise? Bring your mates. Bring your mum. Go ready to roll your eyes - and end up singing anyway. Don’t miss it!
