Bad Dates Anonymous is rather like a blind date or slowed-down speed date, because the performers change every night and you can’t predict who or what you’ll get. I saw it on the opening night, when there were four white male comedians. They said the women hadn’t come yet, which I think was meant as an apology and statement of fact rather than a punchline.
This unpredictability makes it difficult to review, but fortunately the topic is very relatable. If you saw the scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where Indiana Jones is nearly fatally poisoned, and thought, “You call that a bad date? Let me tell you about the time…” well, this show is for you. While you queue, they’ll give you a pen and postcard and ask you to describe your worst date. Please write legibly and don’t use any words that comedians might not understand, or they’ll ask you to translate, and if you do, the ‘anonymous’ part goes right out the window.
That’s only a small part of the show, but you should be prepared for personal questions and audience participation, especially if the crowd is small and you talk while a comedian is on (and don’t heckle, especially if the comedian is Darius Davies). The stand-up routines I saw weren’t for the easily offended, and you may find it funnier if you’re familiar with a wide range of dating apps.
It may not be a perfect date or even the funniest show at this year’s FRINGE WORLD, but if you’re there on the right night, it might be. So if it sounds appealing, go to the ticketing app and swipe right.
