YUCK Circus’ new show is an absolute treat. It doesn’t matter what age you were in the 2000s or even if you hadn’t yet been born, there’s something here for everyone. The women of YUCK Circus have forged a deserved reputation for rambunctiously presented circus skills and they deliver in spades in this, their latest show.
The circus acts are threaded together around the theme of ‘what did the noughties do for us?’ with fond nostalgia focused on some of the more bizarre elements. Sublime individual and team acts intersperse with ridiculous observations from the recent past. We get to see a wide range of circus skills including group acrobatics, aerial silks, roller skating, skipping, groovy dancing and hula-hoops.
Weaving the circus stuff together is Georgia as MC, inviting us to share in her incredulity at the weirdness of things that were once thought cool. Throughout, the performers swagger and strut with smirks on their faces, fingers ready for a flippant gesture, and all with a delightfully insouciant air. They’re so clearly enjoying themselves that it’s impossible not to embrace it.
One of the many highlights of the show for me is the facial expressions the performers adopt - Hula-hoop maestro Shona is simply hilarious. These women present circus skills at the highest level but I love it that they don’t take themselves at all seriously. It’s just an irreverent romp with a banging noughties soundtrack (particularly effective for the ‘boy bands’ routine), driving the nostalgia.
It’s awesome that YUCK Circus are back at FRINGE WORLD with Naughties. There’s no question their many fans will love it but, if you’re not familiar with YUCK Circus’ unique, cheeky approach to circus, do yourself a favour and get along to the show.
