There is a moment in ‘Cursed Cabaret’ where a cornute man in red, who insists that he isn’t actually Satan, says the seven deadly sins are passe and asks the audience to suggest some modern sins. The fact that this fantastic show is only on for two nights is a modern sin.

Despite the advertising blurb, it doesn’t actually feature zombies in sequins or Vincent Price in tassels, but I wouldn’t have been astonished if it had. It does feature a campy vampire, a sword-swallowing living Chucky doll, a giant doing stand-up, the aforementioned Satan doing improv rapping, two burlesque performers acting out Tom Lehrer’s ‘Masochism Tango’, a genuinely funny mime act, a superb singer, a “bogan whisperer”, a captivating MC and, in keeping with the Halloween theme, a pumpkin doing a striptease. The show swings from gorgeous to gothic to Gorey (Edward) to gory with barely a pause, riding high on the audience’s enthusiastic applause. Not all of the show will be to everyone’s taste, and squeamish viewers might prefer to skip parts of Chucky’s performance, but if you have a taste for the weird and/or queer, any one of those acts would be worth the price of admission.

The first night’s show was sold out, and the only other night is selling fast, so buy a ticket if you can. You can see most of these incredibly talented performers in other shows during this FRINGE WORLD season, but if you miss the chance to see all of them together, you’ll curse yourself.
