In the era of Brexit, Trump, and many examples of racial discrimination unfortunately still running rampant, comedy is a powerful tool to foster understanding and compassion. And while Umar Azad’s “Halal? Is it meat you’re looking for?” isn’t political in focus (or politically correct), it certainly educates as well as entertaining – helping us understand another culture just a little bit better.

This award-winning hour of stand-up offers humorous insights into Azad’s experiences as an East London-born, Perth-raised Pakistani growing up between two cultures as a self-proclaimed ‘bogan Muslim’.

He chose to start the show with an unusual opening act. Without spoiling the surprise, I’ll say that you can expect an energetic and enthralling performance before Azad bursts into the spotlight.

Riffing on the dodgiest Perth high schools, the challenges of conservative parents, and things you can’t say on planes, he delivers jokes and anecdotes with honesty and humility. It almost feels as though you’re just sitting in the backyard having a beer (or rather, a Coke).

In true Aussie style, he’s not afraid to poke fun at himself, and despite all the bagging on Forrestfield and Lesmurdie, he has a clear soft spot for Perth.

There were several members of the audience in stitches throughout. Highlights included hearing his mum’s recommended method for finding Osama Bin Laden and seeing him do a ‘halal shoey’. And you’ll never forget his explanation of the difference between Hindus and Muslims…

Having scooped the Best Comedy Award for WA at FRINGE WORLD 2019, sold out shows at Fringe and the Perth International Comedy Festival, and now signed a deal for a TV show about his life as a bogan Muslim, Azad is sure to soon be taking the country by storm.
