Gendermess Productions are back for another year with their weird and wonderful performance, Mache: Repose.

Gendermess’ trademark ‘surrealist’ drag was hilarious and something you won’t find anywhere else.

If you want to see drag done differently, more Leigh Bowery than RuPaul, this is the place to be. The costumes were what brought this whole show together, visually epic and insane.

Their crazy puppet-like glitter bomb costumes and the way they incorporated these into the choreography was a stand out. The sound fit perfectly and really carried the show well.

The music was well picked out, comedic, it brought a storyline to each act and it was perfectly wacky Gendermess. Every act was strong and unique.

You’ll walk away from Mache: Repose feeling like you’ve seen FRINGE WORLD at its best and costume designs like you’ve never seen before.

What they didn’t quite nail was the flow and transition of each act. At many points there was a lull of energy and the audience was unsure of how to react at moments when the stage was left empty and quiet.

There were also some acts that went slightly too long. If cut shorter, with some refined transitions, this could have been an epic performance.

The content this local company produce is otherwise brilliant.

As a company they should be proud of their unique work, especially when trying to pull this style off to a mainstream audience who may be more familiar with the RuPaul niche.

This is undoubtedly really difficult.

What Gendermess as a company are trying to pull off to a mainstream audience is undoubtedly really difficult, they have a monster task, but they deliver an impressive display of avant-garde neo-drag that’s visually stunning and fabulously flamboyant.
