Charlie Caper dazzles and confounds in this off-beat, quirky techno-magic performance with the help of his ingenious robot friends.
Step into the experimental world of Robotricks and see just how far humanity and AI have come.
As the audience gathers in the space reminiscent of an inventor’s workshop, Charlie talks tech and wrangles with cables and laptop, then disappears behind the screen for his self-professed grand entrance.
Like any genius inventor, Charlie carries a plethora of remote controls, has a robot toaster and an assistant who happens to be an AI.
The magic elements are entertaining and cleverly woven into the story as Charlie shows off his inventions and performs some of the more traditional tricks with a robo-twist using cards, a ball and cup, and torn newspaper.
But it’s the robots that ultimately steal the show – at one point quite literally.
There’s Bob the sidekick robot pal that gives Charlie a makeover and cheekily instructs the magician to up the ante on his card trick skills – using one leg and one hand.
There’s cute little Butter, who’s search for meaning in this world surprisingly comes to fruition. There’s the mysterious interloper Furby who, keeps popping up in odd places.
There’s even a little robot that looks much like his maker, who does a hauntingly beautiful dance duet with Charlie before stepping in to complete another magic trick.
The precise timing and amount of programming to create these interactions between Charlie and the robots is truly impressive.
There’s also a transporter that becomes an out-of-control replicator, a bow tie that just won’t sit put, and wooden numbered blocks that will give even the best cryptographer a headache. Not to mention some mysterious puzzle pieces that turn out to be more than Charlie bargained for.
With a sound score reminiscent of Kraftwerk and Bladerunner, fascinating robot inventions with larger than life personalities, and mysterious computer glitches that lead to a dramatic finale, Robotricks will keep you entertained no matter your age or whose side you’re on – robot, or human!
