Step into a world where Disney’s most notorious villains strut, sparkle, and slay like never before!
Villains: A Dizney in Drag Parody is an electrifying spectacle that flips the script on your favourite fairy tales. Forget the princesses and heroes, this riotous production shines a spotlight on the fabulous anti-heroes, reinvented with humour, heart, and a whole lot of sass. Featuring dazzling drag performances, stunning costumes, and side-splitting parodies of iconic Disney tunes, it’s a celebration of villainy like you’ve never seen.
At the heart of the story is Villain (Vil), an aspiring antagonist grappling with an existential crisis while carving out their unique brand of villainy. Disillusioned by societal pressures and a lack of purpose, Vil embraces the dark side, crafting a tragic backstory, perfecting a sinister laugh, and uncovering their true self. Adding delightful chaos is the Hairy Godmother (HG), a bogan fairy godmother turned unlikely mentor. Rebranded by Vil as their "minion," HG guides them with quick wit and sass. Their dynamic blends irreverence and heart, beautifully highlighting themes of self-acceptance and authenticity.
While light-hearted, hilarious, and gloriously raunchy, the production also weaves in deeper themes. It challenges binary notions, interrogates societal pressures, and critiques inequality and the misuse of power. At its core, it celebrates diversity, empowerment, and the joy of embracing one’s true self. The Hairy Godmothers troupe showcases exceptional individual talents, with their mastery of the stage, comedic timing, eye-catching costumes, and truly exceptional vocals that stole the show.
Despite minor technical glitches on this particular night (noting villainous plans in fairytales rarely go off without a hitch!), Villains: A Dizney in Drag Parody was undeniably a crowd-pleaser. Never met with a dull moment, the troupe had this audience laughing, cheering, and dancing on stage, with adoration reflected in the numerous standing ovations.
Wickedly funny and wonderfully bold, this raunchy romp through Disney’s dark side is sure to be one of the stand-out performances at the FRINGE WORLD Festival.
