“Anna Piper Scott: None Of That Queer Stuff” is a gorgeous comedy show - equal parts moving, meaningful and hilarious.
Anna is clearly meant for the comedy stage - her stage presence is enthralling and her jokes were skilfully paced and delivered. The structure of the show is additionally very clever, with everything tying together into a final punchline that brings the audience to their feet. It felt like an honour to be a part of the intimate crowd of this show, almost as if we were getting to witness a talent before their big break.
This, I feel, is what Perth Fringe is all about and what makes going to these kinds of shows so exciting. More than funny, it was clear that the audience felt a certain connection to Anna, with many hanging around afterwards to chat and buy her merch.
It should be no surprise that this is a welcoming show and I would encourage people of all backgrounds to check it out. It could be thoroughly enjoyed by queer people dipping their toes into comedy, seasoned comedy goers and people looking to diversify their Fringe experiences. Anna herself notes how she is trying to make a show “for straight people” about “living queerly” - living in a way that is authentic, bold and fun even if you don't identify as queer. It is this message of authenticity - or “being too queer for public consumption” - that elevates the show from purely comedic to heartfelt and uplifting. Anna is a big personality and she leans into that in a way that is captivating and inspiring. In a word, I was ‘awestruck’.
I simply adored this show and am now a confident new member of the Anna Piper Scott fan club, a group that I’m sure will only exponentially grow. If you’re looking for a great night out and many many laughs, be sure to check out "None Of That Queer Stuff" - it’s a definite winner.
