FRINGE WORLD is all about seeing things unlike anything you've seen before, and I’m sure “surreal sketch comedy circus” probably falls into that category for most people.

That’s what New Zealand trio Laser Kiwi serve up. Imogen Stone and Zane and Degge Jarvie blend dashes of traditional circus arts with copious amounts of humour to create a unique cocktail (complete with olives to garnish).

Having sold out shows and scooped award nominations and wins at previous Fringe Festivals, this time they’ve brought their show “Rise of the Olive” to Perth for its Australian premiere.

Expectations are set from the start with an explanation that the show is a collection of ideas that didn’t make it into previous performances. These are conveniently named - and rated out of 10 by the performers themselves - on a handout so you can follow along. There’s fair warning that a lot of the show will be plain weird and nonsensical. But a lot of the audience have seen the trio before and come back for more, which is a promising sign.

The ensuing 24 short acts range from bewildering to bemusing, with moments of awe. It’s all delivered with that uniquely Kiwi brand of delightfully dorky dry humour, and the trio are unafraid to poke fun at themselves.

Some skits hit the mark more than others, and it takes a while for the audience to really be wowed, but the trio’s earnestness gets you invested in the show.

The acrobatics by Imogen are an absolute highlight, while Zane’s attempts to catch an olive in a martini glass (backed by clever commentary from his brother Degge) keep the audience on the edge of their seats. I would have loved to see more of their (clearly impressive) skills in circus arts.

Excellent lighting, music and sound bring the whole production together slickly, drawing you into the wacky world of olive worship for the hour.

If weird and wonderful is your thing, head to Laser Kiwi for a unique night out - best enjoyed with a drink in hand.
