Did you know there are hidden messages in pop songs? What Did You Expect? is the cabaret show that lets you in on the secrets held by popular music, you never expected were there.

Kiara Macri performs the entire show and her vocal range is extraordinary. From jazz to opera and all styles in between, this woman has a set of pipes and knows how to use them.

Macri matches her shoulder shimmy and facial expression to amplify the lyrics she sings –all of which suddenly have a double meaning. As this act will show you, there are so many popular songs out there, we assume are simple love songs.

Turns out, they actually speak of the horrors of lactose intolerance. Who knew?!

Without sounding at all like the original artists, the appearance of pop songs from Justin Bieber, One Direction, Adele and a selection of Disney Princess favourites makes the show a familiar yet clever one.

What exactly was Ariel collecting under the sea? It will make you blush.

The stand out performance for both vocal acrobatics and intelligent reworking comes in the form of a Spice Girls medley. This number alone is worth the price of entry.

Macri is more than ably accompanied by pianist Ben Clarke. Clarke is clearly a seasoned professional and provides an anchor to Macri’s banter, hitting every cue to move through the set seamlessly.

Clarke’s baritone interjections in some songs, proves a grounding yet comical element during some high-pitched pop. Together, Macri and Clarke have found a winning formula.

Macri is FRINGE WORLD alumni and presents two of her own shows this year. Considering this cabaret act, What Did You Expect?, I’d expect nothing less than another fabulous show coming in February, Kiara with a K.
