The boyband-esque plaid trio, Magnus Danger Magnus, Morgan James and Pierre Ulric, reckon they have a formula to the best kids show ever. Each of the trio play a role in this formula; Magnus the gleeful mad scientist; Ulric the quick fingered magician; and James the slapstick clown. Claiming to be the Best Show Ever is a huge statement, but I think the trio might be onto something.
To start the show, the trio dance and prance with a literal bang…along with some fancy lights and singing. As the audience are introduced to the trio, the performers and their niches shine. The science experiments were well received by the audience. The acrobatics and magic tricks were secondary at first, but play a bigger role later in the show. Most of the older kids were happy to welcome the trio on stage; but there were smaller children distressed by the lights and sound.
Generally speaking, the first half of the performance was consistent. The Rubik’s Cube segment was hilarious and it was a nice way to get kid participation. Ulric is a Rubik’s Cube genius; I am still trying to figure out how he did them so quickly. The only dull point in the performance was the picnic skit; unfortunately, the bubbles weren’t working on stage. Knowing this was a bust, the trio moved on quickly with slapstick comedy to get the audience’s attention back.
Morgan shined in the second half of the show; there was nothing he couldn’t juggle, twirl or yoyo. Personally my child and I enjoyed Magnus’ electrical segment; the trio engage in experiments to Bach’s Toccata & Fugue in D Minor (informally known as the Dracula organ piece) . As a classical music lover, I enjoyed the trio’s selection of music throughout the whole performance. The yoyo segue to the finale was also brilliant; I don’t want to spoil the energetic ending but it was perfect for the show’s length.
Overall, this performance has moments for everyone – even the adults will get a good chuckle. On leaving, I didn’t hear anything but positive comments about the show.
