Night Owl Shows' "Simon & Garfunkel and Beyond" at FRINGE WORLD is a masterful homage to the legendary duo, offering a journey through their iconic hits and solo endeavors. Held at the Lotterywest De Parel Spiegeltent in The Pleasure Garden, the venue's intimate ambiance perfectly complements the show's nostalgic essence.
The performance features Dan Clews, and the much-awarded Angus Munro; buoyed by his title, the "Voice of Edinburgh Fringe 2024." Their combined talents breathe new life into classics like "The Sound of Silence," "The Boxer," and "Bridge Over Troubled Water," as well as solo masterpieces such as "Bright Eyes" and "You Can Call Me Al." The duo's harmonies are both haunting and uplifting, capturing the essence of the original compositions.
What sets this production apart is its commitment to authenticity. Night Owl Shows aims to redefine the tribute genre, bringing authenticity to the art of retro performance. The narrative interludes provide insightful context, enriching the audience's understanding of the music's origins and the artists' journeys. This approach transforms the concert into an educational experience with the use of an audio-visual show, deepening the appreciation for Simon and Garfunkel's artistry.
The sold-out boomer audience’s reaction was overwhelmingly positive. Dan Clews, the founder of Night Owl Shows, is the GOAT at this genre. He also performs in The Carole King and James Taylor Show, which this reviewer gave 5 stars to last year. Munro performs in Californian Dreaming.
This new show doesn’t disappoint. Although only performed twice, Clews and Munro have a rapport on stage that belies the newness of this act. Both Munro and Clews have angelic voices and hit those high notes with consummate ease. Clews is a genius on acoustic guitar, whilst Munro also plays saxophone and keyboards in this performance; quite the talented duo.
In essence, "Simon & Garfunkel and Beyond" is more than a tribute; it's a heartfelt celebration of two musical legends. The meticulous attention to detail, combined with passionate performances, makes this show a must-see for both longtime fans and newcomers alike. It's a testament to the enduring legacy of Simon and Garfunkel, reminding us why their music continues to resonate across generations.
