Down Under: The Songs That Shaped Australia is a humbling tribute to Australian music. Singing and dancing are welcomed and encouraged! From the 1960s through to the 2000s, the show takes you on an upbeat exploration of Aussie music, with fantastic spins on Australian pop, rock, and folk classics. Along the way, the group explains the background and context of the songs – very much showing how music sheds light on important issues in our society and how it truly influences our culture.
Mixed in with the nostalgia is a sobering reminder of the often-hidden atrocities of Australian history and the wrongdoings to our First Nations people, along with an emotional rendition of Blow Up the Pokies (song title self-explanatory) and its tragic backstory. But despite these moments, the bulk of the show is an epic production of a classic Aussie mix tape where you find yourself lost down memory lane… back in your Holden Gemini on a hot summer’s day, the windows down, tape in the deck, speakers blaring, and singing at the top of your lungs.
The rendition of Tina Arena’s Chains is a standout – an absolute belter, and the high notes nailed, where you can feel the passion and dedication of lead singer Michelle. The soundtrack of the show as a whole is a reminder of the incredible talent and artistry we have in Australia – not only from the original artists, but the Down Under performers as well. A lot of fun and a fabulous show to see if you love Aussie music – we should all be so lucky.
