The first thing about Christian Elderfield is that he knows how to tell a tale. The second thing? He’s especially good at delivering a smutty story.

Swingers is a bawdy bit of fun, a 101 on the Aussie swingers’ culture and a love story rolled into 55 minutes of R-rated laughs. Elderfield’s set is tight. It starts with a head count of swingers in the room. The night I attended there was none… or at least none that were out about it. In a previous performance, Elderfield reveals that the entire audience put up their hands. He’s masterful at setting the scene for the eventual climax of his show. He weaves snippets of his personal story into his performance that provide context into how he found himself at Sydney’s largest sex club. This is a far cry from the good Catholic boy that grew up in a small English village with a father that was forthright and unfunny.

Despite the butts, boobs and bits, Elderfield’s story is about love – Barbie and Ken love, as he says. And he thinks he’s found it in a girl called Aimee. When she comes into the performance, things take an anything but singular turn! We’re literally thrust into the Sydney swing set – and this doesn’t mean the history of jazz bands. It’s an intriguing look behind a curtain that could probably do with a good clean. Like a documentary filmmaker, Elderfield guides us through this world of dungeons, orgy rooms and early closing hours!

We are introduced to real-life swingers who will have you second guessing the secret world of your electrician, plumber and lawyer. Elderfield is disarmingly honest and his first attempt at a foursome is hilarious, cringy and a bit sad all at the same time. But the story doesn’t end there… Swingers works for those who want a laugh, an education into an intriguing sexual subculture but most importantly, it’s an hour with a storyteller who wears his heart of his sleeve while telling jokes about cocks.
