“Break a Leg” is a delightful cabaret burlesque show that takes centre stage with all the charm and audacity that one could hope for from a performance of ballet school dropouts.

This production artfully intertwines the elegance of ballet with the sassiness of burlesque, creating a tantalizing spectacle that celebrates both art forms. From the moment the curtain opened, the audience was treated to a vibrant fusion of pirouettes and playful poses. Each act had their own blend of style within their choreography that was a clever blend of classical ballet movements paired with the cheeky flair of burlesque, reminiscent of a plié that unexpectedly transitions into a wiggle. Each dancer brought their unique story to life, showcasing not only their technical skills but also their ability to engage the audience in a whimsical narrative of self-expression.

While sadly there was a slight venue technical fault with the sound that caused some whispering in the audience however, the professionalism of the performers shone brightly. What truly stood out was the sheer confidence exuded by the performers. Unlike the often rigid atmosphere of traditional ballet, “Break a Leg” provided a liberating platform for these dancers to break free from their barre and leap into wild creativity.

The emphasis on body positivity and empowerment resonated throughout the show, culminating in a show that had the entire audience ‘wooing’ for the dancers who dared to challenge convention. Complementing the visual feast were the outstanding vocal performances interspersed throughout the show. The singers delivered spine-tingling renditions that elevated the burlesque experience, drawing parallels to the emotive power of a prima ballerina’s solo. Their voices soared, weaving through the rhythm of the dance, creating a tapestry of sound that was both enchanting and energizing.

Break a Leg isn’t just a performance; it’s a celebration of artistry in all its forms and had the structured elegance of ballet and the free-spirited world of burlesque. It was an invitation to embrace one’s unique journey—whether you’ve graced the stage in toe shoes or are now strutting your stuff in sequins and rhinestones.

With its perfect blend of humour, artistry, and bravery, this show is a must-see for anyone looking to rediscover the joy of movement and song. Who would have thought pointe shoes could meet pasties so harmoniously?
